NKOSI'S HAVEN AND NASHUA'S NKOSI'S HAVEN

Situation Analysis
The first Nkosi's Haven is situated North East of Johannesburg in one of the most densely populated suburbs in the country. Nkosi's Haven believes in the policy of keeping the mother and child together. It is the belief that no mother should be separated from her child because of HIV-status. The intention is to duplicate this pilot project throughout the country.

At present, 23 Mitchell Street, accommodates:

12 mothers - 5 with full-blown AIDS and 6 HIV+

27 children - 10 HIV+ and 17 uninfected

The accommodation includes full-board, washing and over the counter (OTC) medication. Nkosi's Haven pays for all educational costs - from crèche to model C primary and high school fees (including uniforms and pocket money).

Nashua South Africa has recently purchased the property (25 Mitchell Street) adjacent to the original Haven. This will double the capacity of the Mitchell Street Haven. It is also the intention to establish a basic hospice downstairs. Extensive renovations still need to take place and construction sponsors are in the process of being approached.

Empowerment projects such as embroidery, pottery and ceramics, beading and paper- making will be accommodated on the premises through the renovations.

The Nkosi Haven also supports outreach programmes at the townships of Sebokeng and Tembisa. At present 13 orphans are being accommodated, fed and educated. The intention is to duplicate the Mitchell Street Nkosi 's Haven project with the purchase and renovation of a small house in Tembisa.

Nkosi 's Haven pays for all funeral and burial costs.
